Marriage Licences Relating to Ringmer

Introduction

Extracted (by kind permission) from Sussex Record Society Vols 1, 6 and 9.

N.B. The licences listed in this file go up to 1732. Later licences are listed in
Marriage Licences 2.

The Marriage Licences calendared are as follows:
Volume 1 are found in two Act Books in the Bishop's Registry at Lewes marked –

E.1
E.2

2 Aug. 1586, to 30 March 1613.
3 Apr. 1613, to 23 March 1642-3.

The licences were issued by surrogates of the Consistory Court of the Bishop of Chichester for the Archdeaconry of Lewes. The Court had jurisdiction over the whole of East Sussex, with the exception of eleven parishes in the Deanery of South Malling (Buxted with Uckfield, Cliffe near Lewes, Framfield, Glynde, Isfield, Mayfield, Ringmere, South Malling, Stanmer, and Wadhurst) all of which were peculiars of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and of the parish of Battle, a peculiar of the Dean of Battle.

Volume 6 are found in four Act Books of the Consistory Court for the Archdeaconry of Lewes, marked –

E.3
E.4
E.5
E.6

27 August, 1670, to 1 March, 1681-2.
28 March, 1682, to 29 April, 1688.
21 May, 1688, to 23 March, 1701-2.
28 March, 1702, to 17 March. 1728-9.

After this date there are no records of licences until 1764, for which year a bundle of bonds is preserved.
Licences issued under the seal of the Archbishop's Peculiar Court of South Malling are recorded in the Acts of Court, in six volumes numbered

C.1
C.2
C.3
C.4
C.5
C.6

2 May, 1620, to 24 March, 1669-70.
12 April, 1670, to 23 January, 1681-2.
17 April, 1682, to 12 March, 1687-8.
17 May, 1688, to 1 April, 1692.
4 October, 1692, to 26 September, 1721.
1 April, 1692, to 22 December, 1732.

Volume 9 are found in books called Diaries, marked B. to L., 1575 to 1672, detailing the daily business transacted in the Consistory Court of Chichester, the Ringmer entries being in Diary I 5 April, 1666 to 6 March 1671, and in fragments of a Diary 21 November, 1623 to 23 May, 1626, in a parcel numbered 1341.

The entries in these books not only give the names of the parties proposed to be married, but also the names of the sureties to the bond which was usually in a penal sum of £100 for the due performance of the marriage. As one at least of the sureties was either a relative or friend of the intended bride or bridegroom, it will be readily understood that such information is of very great utility to the student engaged in genealogical research.

As no original bonds of so early a date as the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries exist at Lewes, these Act Books contain the only record of the licences granted during that period. The entries are in Latin, but occasionally the name of the trade is in English. In the Vol 1 Calendar the information has been condensed as much as possible and a strict chronological arrangement adopted. The old spelling of surnames has been retained, but Christian names have been in nearly all cases Anglicised. So also the quaint spelling of names of places and of trades and professions, when given in English, has been preserved. The church in which the marriage was to be performed is not specified in the Act Books before the year 1605. After that date this information is generally given in the body of the Act, but in the present Calendar, to economise space, the name of the church appears within brackets at the end of each entry. It must be borne in mind, however, that these licences do not prove that a marriage actually took place, but only afford a clue, otherwise unobtainable. Although a few licences were taken out and no marriage solemnized, the far greater number were duly made use of, as the registers of the respective parishes, if examined, would show.

In order to include as many Ringmer names as possible, this transcription includes licences where not only the prospective bride and/or groom came from Ringmer, but also where a person standing sureties came from Ringmer.

Licences are transcribed in date order. It is possible to use the search engine on the home page of the website by entering the surname you are interested in. However, be mindful of the various forms of spelling which may have occurred over the years. I would therefore highly recommend running your eye down the entire file. Also, be aware that there are more transcriptions still to be added. You may need to return to this page to check out additions.
